An apple a day keeps the doc away

Having an apple everyday enroute to office has become a daily routine now. There was a time she couldn't stand apples. In her book, it was one of the most tasteless fruits.

Now, living out of home, it feels like the only worthwhile food intake at the end of a day. On way to office, there are numerous traffic signals. As soon as the autorickshaw screeches to a stop at these, hordes of faces and hands peer in—selling flowers, tissue boxes, incense sticks etc.

Lost in her thoughts, she waits impatiently for the light to turn green, chewing the apple absentmindedly, paying no attention to the buy-this, buy-that pleas. Today, too, the autorickshaw stopped but unlike other days, a little hand ventured inside the autorickshaw nervously.

The hand was grubby and dirty but tough. The face to which it belonged wasn't at all like the hand. The face was soft. The eyes were hungry, transfixed by the half-eaten apple in her hand. Without thinking, she found herself offering the apple to the little guy. The hand grabbed it hungrily.

Clutching the priceless treasure, the kid slunk away as quietly as he had emerged. With the half-eaten apple.

that half-eaten apple might well have been the full quota of food to the half human (if i may say that). It is high time we realize the importance of the food we waste. Many a times I have seen these hands fighting the street dogs on the pile of garbage for their share of food for the day.
Sorry state of affairs for a society that takes pride to call itself civilized.
